Bushfire Protection in the Australian Summer
Bushfire preparation
Despite being a magnificent and green part of the country, many parts of Tasmania are plagued by green drought, which means in the hot, dry summer months, plant life is dry and vulnerable to wildfires.
An important way to prepare for the drier summer months is to make sure that you not only have a bushfire action plan, but also that you have sufficient water storage to help you and emergency services protect against the threat of wild fires.
Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both household water storage and fire protection.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions
When the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC together with the CSIRO performed bushfire simulations on a selection of water tanks, a steel Pioneer Water Tank held up best.
Importantly, in contrast to the other tanks - which either melted or split - the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water even after a fire front, which could prove vital to firefighting efforts.
If your water tank has been subjected to fire, it is important to ensure that you get your water tested as soon as possible to make sure that it is safe for food preparation or drinking. The water would, however, still be suited for purposes such as watering gardens or lawns.
An Ongoing Battle with the Elements
The New Norfolk climate
New Norfolk is the warmest area of Tasmania during summer afternoons and has a cool temperate oceanic climate
New Norfolk sees an average yearly rainfall of 551.1mm, with rainfall year round.
Founded by farming families, the area around New Norfolk was fertile enough for the town to become self sufficient in the early 1800s.
Rainwater run-off and flooding
Rain is appreciated in rural areas all across Australia, especially those enduring drought conditions, and Tasmania is surely no different.
However; stormwater run off brought on by heavy rainfall, particularly in areas with roads and footpaths, can bring about wide-spread flooding and damage by water that can't escape into the ecosystem.
If New Norfolk received 100mm of rain in a 24 hour deluge, it would require just 100 homes to have water tanks to prevent 2 million litres of water from entering stormwater systems and contributing to stormwater runoff and flooding damages.
The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference
Aqualiner Fresh® antimicrobial water tank liner
A Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner on the market, proven to prevent the growth of algae and bacteria in your water tank.
Utilising Sanitized ® technology, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner has the antibacterial properties of silver woven into the tank liner.
This is an industry leading product, made up of five engineered layers, assembling to produce the most scientifically advanced, cleanest and strongest water tank liner available today.
Pioneer V-Lock® tank wall profile
The Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile has been engineered for durability, and created with the sole purpose of water storage in mind.
This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for strength and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, preventing stretching and wear as the tank fills and empties.
It's a design so good, it won an Australian Design Award for the unrivalled strength and internal support, together with its aesthetically pleasing appearance.

New Norfolk Local Knowledge
New Norfolk fun fact
Approximately 163 of the pioneers who settled around the town were from the 554 folk resettled when the first Norfolk Island settlement was closed - hence the name New Norfolk. These Norfolk Islanders were mainly farming families, who were offered land grants in Tasmania as compensation for their relocation.
Many founding folk were "First Fleeters", transferred from Sydney to Norfolk Island when it was settled just a few weeks after Sydney. Ten First Fleeters are buried in the Methodist Chapel at Lawitta, New Norfolk.
